Dhaka Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and the Bangladesh High Commission or Embassy in your country before traveling, as entry requirements can change.
Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, welcomes international travelers through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), the country's primary gateway. Entry requirements for Bangladesh vary significantly depending on your nationality, with most foreign nationals requiring a visa to enter the country. The immigration process in Dhaka is relatively straightforward, though travelers should be prepared for potential queues during peak hours and ensure all documentation is in order before arrival. Bangladesh offers several visa options including traditional visa-on-arrival for eligible nationalities, e-Visa services for many countries, and standard embassy-issued visas. The government has been working to modernize its immigration system, introducing online visa applications to streamline the process. Travelers should note that Bangladesh has specific requirements regarding passport validity, typically requiring at least six months of validity from the date of entry. Before traveling to Dhaka, it's essential to verify current entry requirements, as policies can change based on diplomatic relations, security situations, and health considerations. The immigration authorities are generally professional, though English proficiency may vary. Having all required documents readily accessible, including return tickets, accommodation proof, and sufficient funds documentation, will facilitate a smoother entry process.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Bangladesh has a relatively restrictive visa policy, with most foreign nationals requiring advance authorization to enter the country. Visa options include e-Visa, visa-on-arrival for select nationalities, and traditional embassy-issued visas.

Visa-Free Entry
90 days

Very limited visa-free access to Bangladesh

Includes
Bhutan Maldives (30 days) Nepal (90 days) Seychelles (90 days)

Visa-free entry is extremely limited. Citizens of most countries, including all Western nations, require a visa. SAARC country citizens may have simplified procedures but most still require visas.

Visa on Arrival
30 days (tourist visa)

Available for citizens of select countries arriving at Dhaka airport

Includes
United States United Kingdom Australia Canada Japan South Korea Singapore Malaysia Hong Kong most EU countries (varies by nationality)
How to Apply: Available at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport immigration counter upon arrival. Bring passport photos, return ticket, hotel booking, and payment. Processing can take 30-60 minutes depending on queue.
Cost: USD 50-51 (varies by nationality and visa type)

Visa on arrival is subject to immigration officer approval. Pre-arranged e-Visa is recommended to avoid potential complications or long waits. Business travelers may need additional documentation.

e-Visa (Electronic Visa)
30 days (single/multiple entry options available)

Online visa application system available for most nationalities

Includes
Available for citizens of most countries including US, UK, EU nations, Australia, Canada, China, India, and many others

Cost: USD 51-100 depending on visa type and nationality (plus processing fees)

e-Visa is strongly recommended over visa on arrival for guaranteed entry. Print the e-Visa approval and present it at immigration. Different categories available: tourist, business, conference, medical, and others.

Embassy/Consulate Visa
Varies: 30 days to multiple years depending on visa type

Traditional visa application through Bangladesh diplomatic missions

How to Apply: Apply at the nearest Bangladesh High Commission, Embassy, or Consulate. Submit application form, passport, photos, travel documents, invitation letters (if applicable), and fees. Processing takes 5-10 working days typically.

Required for nationalities not eligible for visa on arrival or e-Visa, and for long-term stays, work permits, student visas, or complex cases. Some nationalities may face additional scrutiny or longer processing times.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, travelers proceed through immigration, baggage claim, and customs. The process is generally efficient, though queues can be lengthy during peak arrival times. Having all documents organized and readily accessible will expedite your entry.

1
Disembarkation and Health Screening
Exit the aircraft and follow signs to immigration. You may pass through health screening checkpoints where temperature checks or health declarations may be required, depending on current health protocols.
2
Immigration Queue
Join the appropriate immigration queue: separate lines typically exist for Bangladeshi nationals, SAARC nationals, and foreign nationals. Visa on arrival applicants should look for designated counters, usually located before main immigration.
3
Visa on Arrival (if applicable)
If obtaining visa on arrival, proceed to the visa counter first. Present your passport, return ticket, hotel confirmation, passport photos, and payment (USD cash preferred). Complete the application form provided. Wait for processing and payment of fees.
4
Immigration Counter
Present your passport with valid visa (or e-Visa printout), completed arrival/disembarkation card, and return ticket. The immigration officer will verify your documents, may ask questions about your visit, scan your passport, and take your photograph and fingerprints. Your passport will be stamped with entry date and permitted duration of stay.
5
Baggage Claim
Proceed to baggage claim area and collect your luggage from the designated carousel. Trolleys are available (may require small fee). Report any missing luggage to your airline's baggage service counter immediately.
6
Customs Declaration
Complete customs declaration form if carrying items to declare (currency over USD 5,000, restricted items, or goods exceeding duty-free allowance). Choose appropriate customs channel: Green (nothing to declare) or Red (items to declare).
7
Exit and Ground Transportation
Exit the arrivals hall. Official taxi counters, ride-sharing app pick-up points, and hotel shuttle meeting areas are available. Be cautious of unofficial taxi touts.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in Bangladesh. Must have at least two blank pages for stamps.

Yellow Fever Certificate
Required if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Must be presented at health screening.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Apply for e-Visa in advance rather than relying on visa on arrival to avoid potential delays or complications at immigration.
Keep all documents (passport, visa, tickets, hotel bookings) in an easily accessible folder or travel wallet for quick presentation.
Have small USD bills ready for visa on arrival payment if applicable, as change may not always be available.
Take passport-sized photos with you (white background) as photo booths may not be available or functioning at the airport.
Fill out the arrival card during your flight to save time at immigration. Use block letters and ensure all information matches your passport exactly.
Be patient and courteous with immigration officers. Answer questions directly and honestly. Avoid volunteering unnecessary information.
Keep your immigration stamp visible and check that the permitted stay duration is correctly stamped in your passport before leaving the counter.
Exchange some currency at the airport if arriving late at night, though rates are better in the city. ATMs are available in the arrivals hall.
Download offline maps and have your hotel address written in Bengali if possible, to show taxi drivers.
Register with your embassy upon arrival if planning an extended stay or if recommended by your government's travel advisory.

Health Insurance

Health insurance with international coverage is strongly recommended but not mandatory for entry. Medical facilities in Dhaka vary in quality, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to nearby countries like Thailand or Singapore. Ensure your insurance covers emergency medical evacuation. Medical costs must often be paid upfront in cash. Keep all receipts for insurance claims.

Current Health Requirements: Check current COVID-19 and other health-related entry requirements before travel, as these can change rapidly. As of late 2024, most COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, but requirements may be reinstated. Visit the Bangladesh Ministry of Health website or check with your airline for the latest requirements. Consider malaria prophylaxis if traveling to certain regions outside Dhaka. Bring sufficient supplies of any prescription medications as specific brands may not be available locally.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa (same requirements as adults). Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing travel, including contact information. Single parents should carry the child's birth certificate. For adopted children, carry adoption papers. Some airlines and immigration officers may request these documents. Unaccompanied minors require special arrangements with airlines and may need additional documentation from immigration authorities.

Traveling with Pets

Pets require an import permit from the Department of Livestock Services, Bangladesh, obtained before travel. Required documents: valid rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days old but not more than 12 months), veterinary health certificate issued within 7 days of travel, microchip identification, and original vaccination records. Pets must undergo quarantine inspection upon arrival. Some breeds may be restricted. Contact the Department of Livestock Services well in advance (at least 4-6 weeks) to arrange permits. Airlines have specific pet travel requirements - confirm with your carrier. Consider that Bangladesh has limited pet-friendly accommodations and veterinary services compared to Western countries.

Extended Stays and Visa Extensions

Tourist visas can be extended at the Department of Immigration and Passports office in Dhaka (Segunbagicha location). Apply before your current visa expires - ideally 7-10 days in advance. Required documents: passport, current visa, application form, passport photos, proof of accommodation, financial means, and extension fee. Extensions are granted at immigration officer's discretion and typically for 1-2 months. For long-term stays, consider applying for appropriate visa category (business, student, work) before arrival. Work permits require employer sponsorship and separate approval from relevant authorities. Student visas require admission letter from recognized educational institution. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans.

Business Travelers

Business visa required for conducting business activities, attending conferences, or meetings. Required documents: invitation letter from Bangladesh company or organization (on letterhead with details of visit purpose and duration), business registration documents of inviting company, applicant's company letter, and itinerary. Business visas can be single or multiple entry with validity from 3 months to 5 years depending on purpose and bilateral agreements. Business travelers should carry business cards, company documentation, and invitation letters even after receiving visa, as these may be requested at immigration. For extended business stays, consider applying for business visa with multiple entries rather than tourist visa.

Journalists and Media Professionals

Journalists, photographers, and film crews require special permission and appropriate visa category from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and/or Ministry of Information. Tourist visas do not permit journalistic activities. Apply well in advance (at least 4-6 weeks) through Bangladesh embassy/consulate with detailed information about assignment, locations to be visited, and purpose. Unauthorized journalistic activity can result in detention, deportation, and equipment confiscation. Documentary filmmakers need additional permissions from relevant ministries. Carry press credentials and authorization letters at all times when working.

Medical Travelers

Medical visa available for those seeking medical treatment in Bangladesh (though more commonly Bangladeshis travel abroad for treatment). Required documents: letter from recognized hospital/medical institution in Bangladesh confirming appointment and treatment plan, medical reports from home country, and proof of financial means to cover treatment. Medical attendant visa available for one accompanying person. Apply through Bangladesh embassy/consulate with medical documentation. Some hospitals may assist with visa invitation letters.

Volunteers and NGO Workers

Volunteers and NGO workers require appropriate visa category and NGO Bureau clearance. Tourist visas do not permit volunteer work. Sponsoring organization must be registered with NGO Affairs Bureau and obtain clearance for foreign volunteers. Process can take several months. Required documents: invitation from registered NGO, NGO registration documents, detailed work plan, and police clearance from home country. Some organizations arrange volunteer visas through Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Working on tourist visa is illegal and can result in deportation and ban on re-entry.

Dual Nationals and Persons of Bangladeshi Origin

Dual nationals with Bangladeshi citizenship must enter and exit Bangladesh on their Bangladeshi passport, even if they hold another nationality. Persons of Bangladeshi origin may be eligible for simplified visa procedures or no objection certificate (NOC). Former Bangladeshi citizens may need to provide documentation of citizenship renunciation. Bangladesh does not fully recognize dual citizenship for all purposes - consult with Bangladesh embassy about your specific situation. Entry/exit on wrong passport can cause complications.
